NHBB Silicon Nitride Ceramic Balls

Published: May 07, 2026 Engineering Team

As a core member of MinebeaMitsumi Aerospace, NHBB (New Hampshire Ball Bearings, Inc.) has been deeply engaged in the precision bearing field for more than 70 years. Its R&D and produced silicon nitride ceramic balls are core components specially designed for medium to large precision ball bearings and micro-instrument bearings. Their core advantages focus on material properties, manufacturing precision and working condition adaptability, rather than generalized performance promotion, and they are widely used in aerospace, energy and power and other fields with extremely high requirements for transmission reliability.

These ceramic balls use silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) as the only core material, which is different from traditional steel balls. Their R&D and production strictly follow the ASTM F2094 international standard, and the room temperature hardness is stably controlled above 1380 HV10 (converted to HRC hardness > 78). This hardness index ensures that they are not easy to deform during high-intensity operation, solving the pain points of traditional steel balls such as easy wear and seizure from the material level. At the same time, the inherent chemical inertness of silicon nitride endows it with natural corrosion resistance, which can adapt to humid, mild acid-base and dusty environments without additional coating protection.

In terms of manufacturing process, relying on three production bases in the United States, NHBB realizes full-process independent control from raw material purification to finished product inspection, and has passed authoritative certifications such as ISO 9001, AS9100 and Nadcap, ensuring that the geometric tolerance, surface roughness and sphericity of each ceramic ball reach the top level of the industry. Specifically, its sphericity error is controlled within 0.0005mm, and the surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.02μm, which is far superior to the standard of ordinary ceramic balls. This high-precision control directly improves the operation stability of the bearing and reduces vibration and noise during transmission.

Compared with traditional steel balls, the core performance advantages of NHBB silicon nitride ceramic balls can be quantified by specific data: the density is only 3.2g/cm³, which is 42% of that of steel (7.8g/cm³), that is, 58% lighter than steel balls. This lightweight feature, when applied in high-speed rotating mechanisms, can reduce the bearing centrifugal force by more than 40%, significantly weaken the gyroscopic effect, not only improve the operation efficiency of the equipment, but also reduce the load of driving components and extend the service life of the whole machine. At the same time, its internal friction coefficient is as low as 0.0015 (usually 0.003-0.005 for steel balls), which can effectively reduce the bearing operating temperature rise. At the same speed, it is 15-25℃ lower than the steel ball bearing, avoiding lubrication failure and component damage caused by overheating.

Its surface finish is 65% higher than that of steel balls. This feature not only can delay the degradation speed of lubricating oil — under the same working conditions, the lubricating oil replacement cycle can be extended by more than 30% — but also can completely eliminate the cold welding and adhesive wear between ceramic balls and steel rings, which is the core reason why the ceramic balls can still operate stably in scenes with limited lubrication conditions. In addition, its maximum temperature resistance can reach 800℃, far exceeding that of steel balls (within 400℃), which can be directly adapted to high-temperature working conditions such as hot air valves and gas turbine engines, without additional cooling devices, reducing the complexity of equipment design.

In practical applications, the advantages of NHBB silicon nitride ceramic balls have been fully verified: in the aerospace field, they are used in helicopter gear boxes and accessory gear boxes, which can withstand high-speed operation of 15000r/min and maintain stable transmission in the temperature range of -50℃ to 600℃; in the energy and power field, they are adapted to micro turbines (for power generation), which can increase the unit power generation efficiency by more than 5% and reduce the frequency of bearing maintenance; in the precision industrial field, they are used in high-speed spindles of semiconductor equipment, which can ensure that the spindle runout is ≤ 0.001mm, meeting the requirements of micro-level processing.

To meet the cost needs of different customers, NHBB has launched hybrid structure bearings combining ceramic balls and steel rings. This design is not a simple assembly, but optimizes the fit tolerance between ceramic balls and steel rings (controlled within 0.001-0.002mm) to maximize the reduction of adhesive wear between dissimilar materials. Its service life is 2-3 times longer than that of pure steel bearings, while the cost is only 60%-70% of that of pure ceramic bearings, and it has now become the mainstream selection in fields such as aviation instrumentation and high-speed machine tools.

The core value of NHBB silicon nitride ceramic balls lies in solving the pain points of "high speed, high temperature, low wear and high reliability" in the transmission of high-end equipment with quantifiable performance parameters and strict manufacturing standards, rather than simple brand promotion. Relying on more than 70 years of precision manufacturing experience, NHBB can provide customized ceramic ball specifications (diameter range 1.5mm-50mm) according to the specific working conditions of customers, adapt to the assembly needs of different types of bearings, and provide more targeted transmission solutions for high-end equipment.
